Wellesley exhibit looks at the black woman’s body

From the “Hottentot Venus” of the 19th century to the video vixens so prevalent in hip-hop music videos today, pop culture renderings of the black female form have been debated — and often decried — for years, by social critics and ordinary people alike.

A new exhibit that opened yesterday at Wellesley College’s Davis Museum and Cultural Center aims to add to the discussion, offering in-depth analysis through art, photography, film and performances on the way perceptions of black women have evolved over the last 500 years.

Eye on the Storm: A First-Person Perspective on Katrina

Many books and films have been made in the last three years about the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. But the new film, “Trouble the Water,” opening for Greater Boston audiences on Friday, is the first documentary shot in part by Katrina survivors before, during and after the storm — giving new meaning to citizen journalism.

Second Suffolk candidates talk issues, accountability

The hottest political race in the city came to a head last Thursday evening at English High School in Jamaica Plain, where state Sen. Dianne Wilkerson and Sonia Chang-Diaz, her opponent in the upcoming Sept. 16 Democratic primary election, debated some of the most pressing issues in the Second Suffolk District.

Obama speech draws crowd at Northeastern

The coincidence was not lost on the crowd at Northeastern University’s John D. O’Bryant African American Institute.

Those who gathered to watch Sen. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech last Thursday evening at the Democratic National Convention were very much aware that the event fell on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
