Earth Day turns 40 this year, but many African-Americans have never seen environmentalism as a priority until recently. With Van Jones and Majora Carter becoming household names, green is now the new black. KFC doubles down on controversial bun-less sandwich

Next Monday Kentucky Fried Chicken will roll out the controversial Double Down “sandwich” nationwide. If you recall from last summer, KFC created online buzz when the bun-less sandwich only consisting of two white meat chicken breast fillets with a filling of bacon, Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese with the Colonels Sauce was test marketed in Rhode Island and Nebraska.

Outrage over the existence of such a high caloric beast came from many quarters, myself included, who believe that the fast food company is only contributing to the nation’s obesity crisis, especially in communities of color where access to healthy food is lacking. With the national roll out, KFC is getting ahead of another potential PR disaster by getting out all the facts about the Double Down.

Is the average single black woman really worth just $5?

Most of us have already known about the wealth gap along racial and gender lines, but now a very disturbing new study actually puts a bright spotlight on the problem. The new report by the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, formerly the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC) called Lifting as We Climb: Women of Color, Wealth and America’s Future shows that while women of all races earn less income and have less wealth than their male counterparts, black women are severely at a disadvantage.

Tyler Perry’s off-screen performances are worthy of NAACP honor

Filmmaker Tyler Perry will receive the Chairman’s Award at tonight’s NAACP Image Awards. This high honor is bestowed upon those who have established themselves through distinguished public service. Previous winners have been President Obama, environmental activist Wangari Maathai and former Vice President Al Gore.

Okay, so lets get the obvious out on the table first. Perry has many critics – myself included – who feel that his films and television shows have done a disservice to the black community, with his constant portrayal of us as buffoons and crackheads. There is also the complaint that he has had made millions by selling out to Hollywood with these negative characters.
