PBS series spotlights Native American past

A groundbreaking five-part series and multimedia project debuting this Monday on the PBS program “American Experience” aims to promote Native American history from its often-overlooked position and take an in-depth look at the lasting contributions of the “original Americans.”

 “We Shall Remain” includes five 90-minute documentaries spanning 300 years of American history from the Native American perspective, as well as public radio and online components designed to engage viewers from a grassroots level.

Barbara Lee talks about her new book

I was in New York a couple of weeks ago and California Rep. Barbara Lee was at Hue-Man Bookstore to promote her book, Renegade for Peace and Justice.  In the above clip I recorded, where she is joined by New York Rep. Charlie Rangel, Lee speaks about how veteran White House correpondent Helen Thomas inspired her to write the book, and why she spoke out about her traumatic experience with domestic violence.

Prisoners lack health care resources, sympathy of others

During a panel discussion on prison health care held last Thursday at the John Adams Courthouse in Pemberton Square, human rights advocates made a case for why improving the medical conditions for those who are incarcerated can also improve the health and well-being of those outside prison walls.
